One step further to create a better future

(JessicaBlueElephants, 2014)

March 18, 2019 - Kala proudly announced their recent recognition by the Fair Trade Community to reach a common goal and make our world a better place to live. On March 15, Kala received its official member status of Fair Trade, which is the most acknowledged, sustainable community globally. Kala’s priority is to ensure transparency and adequate business practices with its producers in developing countries.

Ethical shopping has become a hype nowadays, but many people have not yet understood the deeper meaning behind the movement. Fair Trade merges the interest of suppliers and businesses together by supporting the environment. Hence, it goes far beyond: “Fairtrade has a vision of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade and business so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood.” (Fair Trade, 2019) However, many businesses take advantage of cheap labor by outsourcing their production or purchasing products from low cost countries without being aware of the consequences. The role of Fair Trade is to provide a clear guidance for businesses such as Kala.

What does this mean to Kala? Kala is following the route of sustainable fashion and takes its social responsibility very seriously, by supporting the producers in Columbia and Nepal. Being a Fair Trade Certified business is confirming the mission of Kala: “Together with you, we make the world a little better. Buying our products will ensure that people are treated fairly and get paid an honest wage as well as provide their families with a higher standard of living through access to education and healthcare”. Fair Trade is an excellent support for Kala follow the right path and to maintain the mission of the company.

Kala goes the extra miles to support the producers locally. The co-founders of Kala, Maaike Bakker and Julia van Vliet, visit the producers in Columbia and Nepal regularly to ensure the welfare of the people. It enables Kala to strengthen the relationship with the producers and adds a personal touch to each product that has been produced. Kala’s products are not only sustainable, but also made with love and dignity.
